It's coming up to mobile phone contract upgrade time again for me. I'll be sticking with Vodafone, but the question is which handset to go for. The problem is that, although mobile technology advances apace and each new phone is faster and more feature packed, manufacturers are reaching a point of diminishing returns. Updates are increasingly incremental and the big 'wow' moment when you get your first smartphone drifts further into the past. An upgrade from a 5MP camera to a 8MP camera, hmm.., nice but not life changing. More memory, faster processor, whizzier interface, different operating system, yeah... whatever. Nothing quite compares to your first smartphone - suddenly you can read your email, surf the web, share photos, post on Facebook and much more, from anywhere and at any time without firing up a laptop. That is revolutionary.
Sure, many people will always want the newest and shiniest gadget, but the amount of newness and shininess that each new phone has can only decrease as time goes on. There is only so much technology that can be packed into a handset.
We await the next revolution, the new 'wow' moment. Foldable, transparent, 3D printable phones maybe? Who knows...
